Delinquent Tax Returns – How I Can Help

If you’ve fallen behind on filing your tax returns, you’re not alone—and it’s never too late to get back into compliance.

People fall behind for many reasons. A major life event, illness, financial hardship, loss of records, divorce, or simply feeling overwhelmed can make it difficult to keep up with tax filing requirements. Whatever the reason, the important thing is to address the problem before it becomes more complicated.

The first step is determining which tax returns need to be filed. In many cases, I can obtain your IRS wage and income transcripts and account information to help reconstruct the information needed to prepare accurate returns, even if some of your records are missing.

Filing delinquent returns can provide several important benefits:

  • It may stop or prevent additional IRS enforcement actions.
  • It can reduce uncertainty by determining the actual amount you owe—or whether you’re entitled to a refund.
  • It allows us to evaluate the best options for resolving any remaining tax liability.
  • It helps bring you back into compliance with your tax filing obligations.

Some taxpayers are surprised to learn that the IRS may have already filed a Substitute for Return (SFR) on their behalf. An SFR is prepared using information reported to the IRS by employers and financial institutions, but it generally does not include deductions, exemptions, or credits you may be entitled to claim. Filing an accurate original return can often reduce the tax the IRS says you owe.

As an Enrolled Agent, I can help identify the returns that need to be filed, prepare accurate delinquent returns, communicate with the IRS on your behalf, and develop a strategy for resolving any tax balance that remains. If you owe taxes after the returns are filed, we’ll discuss all available resolution options, including payment plans, penalty relief, or other alternatives that may be appropriate.

There is no advantage to waiting. The sooner your delinquent returns are addressed, the sooner we can work toward resolving your tax situation and giving you peace of mind.

If you have unfiled tax returns, contact me for a confidential consultation. Together, we’ll develop a practical plan to get you back on track.
