IRS Collection Notice – What You Quickly Need to Do

Receiving an IRS collection notice can be alarming, but it’s important to remember that a notice is not the end of the road. In most cases, the IRS is notifying you of a balance due and giving you an opportunity to respond before taking more serious collection action.

The worst thing you can do is ignore the notice. IRS collection letters include important deadlines, and delaying your response can limit your options and lead to additional penalties, interest, or enforcement actions.

If you’ve received a collection notice, here are the first steps to take:

  • Read the notice carefully. Determine what the IRS is claiming you owe and note any response deadlines.
  • Verify the information. Make sure the balance is correct and that all your tax returns have been filed.
  • Don’t assume you have to pay everything immediately. Depending on your financial situation, there may be several options available.
  • Seek professional guidance. The earlier you address the issue, the more opportunities there may be to resolve it on favorable terms.

As an Enrolled Agent, I can review your notice, explain exactly what it means, and communicate with the IRS on your behalf. Together, we’ll determine the best course of action based on your circumstances. Depending on your situation, that may include:

  • An installment agreement that fits your budget
  • Penalty relief, if you qualify
  • Currently Not Collectible status if paying would create a financial hardship
  • An Offer in Compromise, if you meet the IRS qualifications
  • Challenging the amount owed if the balance is incorrect

If collection activity has already progressed to a wage garnishment, bank levy, or the filing of a federal tax lien, don’t assume it’s too late. There are often steps that can be taken to resolve the matter and, in some cases, have collection action modified or suspended while your case is being reviewed.

My goal is to help you understand your rights, evaluate all available resolution options, and work toward the best possible outcome. Every case is different, and the sooner we begin, the more options are typically available.

If you’ve received an IRS collection notice, don’t wait for the next letter. Contact me as soon as possible so we can review your situation and develop a plan to move forward with confidence.
